If each bag contains 2 cubic feet, buy 14 whole bags to obtain at least one cubic yard of mulch.
The exact volume conversion is:
27 cubic feet ÷ 2 cubic feet per bag = 13.5 bags

Always check the cubic-foot volume printed on the package before using the table. Bag sizes vary, so a statement such as “14 bags per yard” is incomplete unless it specifies 2-cubic-foot bags.

Why the conversion starts with 27 cubic feet
A cubic yard is a cube measuring 3 feet long, 3 feet wide, and 3 feet high:
3 feet × 3 feet × 3 feet = 27 cubic feet
That establishes the reusable conversion formula:
Bags needed = cubic yards × 27 ÷ cubic feet per bag
For one cubic yard:
- 1-cubic-foot bags: 1 × 27 ÷ 1 = 27 bags
- 1.5-cubic-foot bags: 1 × 27 ÷ 1.5 = 18 bags

This is a volume calculation. It does not depend on:
- The bag’s weight
- The number of bags on a pallet
- The supplier’s pallet arrangement
- The mulch material, brand, or color
- The bag’s apparent exterior size
Do not try to infer usable mulch volume from the dimensions or shape of a flexible package. Use the cubic-foot capacity printed on its label.
Mulch type does not alter the fixed volume conversion. One labeled cubic foot occupies the same nominal volume whether the material is shredded bark or wood chips. However, material, moisture, particle size, settling, and compaction can affect weight, handling, and how the mulch behaves after spreading. That is why bag weight is not a reliable substitute for labeled volume.
Round only after calculating the complete project quantity. If the final result is 20.25 bags and bags are sold individually, buy 21.
When practical, combine the calculated volumes for all beds before rounding. For example, if three beds require 4.2, 5.2, and 6.2 bags, rounding each separately would produce 5 + 6 + 7, or 18 bags. Adding first gives 15.6 bags, which rounds to 16. The combined approach avoids creating unnecessary excess through repeated rounding.
A separate allowance for uneven ground or application variation may still be useful, but it should be an intentional planning decision rather than an accidental result of rounding every bed independently.

For example, four yards in 2-cubic-foot bags requires:
4 × 27 ÷ 2 = 108 ÷ 2 = 54 bags
Three yards in 1.5-cubic-foot bags requires:
3 × 27 ÷ 1.5 = 81 ÷ 1.5 = 54 bags
Neither result needs purchase rounding because both are whole numbers.
For a larger or fractional project, extend the same formula. If the measured requirement is 7.25 cubic yards and the bags hold 2 cubic feet:
7.25 × 27 ÷ 2 = 97.875 bags
You would buy 98 whole bags before adding any optional project allowance.
Do not round the cubic-yard requirement before converting it. If a project needs 2.4 cubic yards, calculate:
2.4 × 27 ÷ bag volume
Then round the final bag count. Rounding 2.4 yards up to 3 yards first would add substantially more material than the measured volume requires.
How much area one cubic yard of mulch covers
Bag count tells you how much material you are buying. Coverage tells you how far that material will go, and it changes with application depth.
Assuming an even layer, the approximate coverage is:

Depth matters because the same volume covers more area when spread thinly and less area when spread thickly. For a 2-inch layer, first convert the depth to feet:
2 ÷ 12 = 1/6 foot
Then divide the available volume by that depth:
27 ÷ 1/6 = 162 square feet
At 3 inches:
3 ÷ 12 = 0.25 foot 27 ÷ 0.25 = 108 square feet
At 4 inches:
4 ÷ 12 = 1/3 foot 27 ÷ 1/3 = 81 square feet
A common mistake is to quote 162 square feet per yard without identifying the depth. That coverage applies to a 2-inch layer, not a 3-inch layer. At 3 inches, one cubic yard covers approximately 108 square feet.
Bag coverage works the same way. A 2-cubic-foot bag spread 3 inches, or 0.25 foot, deep covers:
2 ÷ 0.25 = 8 square feet
These figures assume a reasonably even layer. Actual consumption may vary because of:
- Uneven or sloped ground
- Curved or irregular bed edges
- Depressions and raised areas
- Existing mulch left in place
- Spillage during transport or spreading
- Settling or compaction
- Variation in spreading depth
Treat depth as a project input, not as a universal recommendation. The amount to add depends on the existing layer, site, plants, material, drainage, and purpose of the bed. The calculation works at any selected depth as long as that depth is entered accurately.
Calculate mulch from bed dimensions and depth
For a rectangular bed, begin with surface area:
Length in feet × width in feet = square feet
Convert the intended depth from inches to feet:
Depth in inches ÷ 12 = depth in feet
Then calculate volume:
Length × width × depth in feet = cubic feet
Convert cubic feet to cubic yards:
Cubic feet ÷ 27 = cubic yards
The combined formula is:
Cubic yards = length × width × depth in feet ÷ 27
If you already know the square footage, use:
Cubic feet = square feet × depth in inches ÷ 12
Finally, convert the project volume to bags:
Bags = cubic feet ÷ cubic feet per bag
Or, after converting to cubic yards:

Consider a rectangular bed 24 feet long and 6 feet wide with an intended additional depth of 2 inches.
1. Calculate the area:
24 × 6 = 144 square feet
2. Convert depth to feet:
2 ÷ 12 = 0.1667 foot
3. Calculate cubic feet:
144 × 0.1667 ≈ 24 cubic feet
4. Convert to cubic yards:
24 ÷ 27 ≈ 0.89 cubic yard
5. Convert to 2-cubic-foot bags:
24 ÷ 2 = 12 bags
Because the result is already a whole number, no rounding is required.
For multiple beds, calculate each bed’s volume and add the totals before converting to bags:

When refreshing an existing bed, calculate the additional depth you intend to add, not automatically the entire desired finished layer. If usable mulch remains and you plan to add only 1 inch, enter 1 inch. Calculating a full 3-inch layer would treat the bed as empty and could overstate the purchase.
Coverage shortcuts are valid only when the depth is stated:
- Divide square footage by 162 for cubic yards at 2 inches
- Divide square footage by 108 for cubic yards at 3 inches
- Divide square footage by 81 for cubic yards at 4 inches

Worked example: 200 square feet at 3 inches deep
Suppose a garden bed covers 200 square feet and you want to add mulch 3 inches deep.
Step 1: Convert the depth to feet.
3 inches ÷ 12 = 0.25 foot
Step 2: Calculate cubic feet.
200 square feet × 0.25 foot = 50 cubic feet
Step 3: Convert cubic feet to cubic yards.
50 ÷ 27 = 1.8519 cubic yards
For planning, that is approximately 1.85 cubic yards.
Step 4: Convert to 2-cubic-foot bags.
50 ÷ 2 = 25 bags

You can cross-check the result using coverage. At 3 inches deep, one 2-cubic-foot bag covers approximately 8 square feet:
200 ÷ 8 = 25 bags
Both methods agree.
This example also shows why rounding order matters. If you round 1.85 cubic yards to 2 full yards before converting, the calculation becomes:
2 × 27 ÷ 2 = 27 bags
The measured project requires only 25 bags, so rounding the yardage early adds two bags before any intentional allowance.
For a fractional result, suppose a different project requires 40.5 cubic feet:
40.5 ÷ 2 = 20.25 bags
Because sealed bags are normally purchased as whole units, buy 21 bags. They provide 42 cubic feet, leaving 1.5 cubic feet beyond the calculated requirement.
That remainder is not the same as a formal project allowance. It is simply the unavoidable excess created by buying whole units.
Allowances, scoops, and other ways buyers end up short
A mathematical estimate assumes accurate measurements and an even application. An optional allowance can account for:
- Spills while moving or opening bags
- Uneven or sloped ground
- Irregular or difficult-to-measure edges
- Small measurement errors
- Settling or compaction
- Inconsistent spreading depth
- Thin areas discovered during application
Some supplier calculators suggest considering approximately 10% extra for settling, spillage, or uneven areas. Treat that as an optional planning allowance, not a requirement for every project (Pine Straw King).
Before adding extra, consider:
- How accurately can the bed be measured?
- Is the ground level or sloped?
- Does usable mulch already remain?
- Is the intended depth flexible?
- Is the material likely to settle?
- Can unopened bags be stored or returned?
- Could a small surplus be used elsewhere?
Calculate all beds first, combine their volumes, and then apply any chosen allowance. Convert the adjusted total to bags and round only the final result.
For example, a combined project volume of 70 cubic feet with a 10% allowance becomes:
70 × 1.10 = 77 cubic feet
For 2-cubic-foot bags:
77 ÷ 2 = 38.5 bags

Do not assume one scoop equals one cubic yard. “Scoop” is a supplier-defined term, and capacities can vary. Ask the seller to state the scoop’s volume in cubic feet or cubic yards before comparing it with bags (Mulch Mound).

- How many cubic feet are in one scoop?
- How many cubic yards are in one scoop?
- Is the capacity level-filled or heaped?
- Is the quoted price per scoop or per cubic yard?
Once the supplier provides a volume, use the standard conversion. If a particular seller defines one scoop as 18 cubic feet, that scoop equals nine 2-cubic-foot bags and two-thirds of a cubic yard:
18 ÷ 2 = 9 bags 18 ÷ 27 = 0.667 cubic yard
That example applies only to a scoop with a stated 18-cubic-foot capacity. It does not establish a universal scoop size.

Neither format is automatically best for every property.
Bagged mulch may be practical when:
- The project is small
- Beds are difficult to reach with a wheelbarrow
- Material must be carried through a narrow access point
- Mulch will be transported in a personal vehicle
- Spreading will happen in stages
- There is no suitable place for a loose pile
- Unopened leftovers can be stored or returned
Bulk mulch may be practical when:
- Several cubic yards are required
- Delivery is available

Do not assume bulk mulch is always cheaper, fresher, or higher quality. Those are not consequences of the volume conversion, and local bag promotions, delivery fees, product grade, project size, and transportation needs can change the result.
Likewise, bags are not always more convenient. Carrying dozens of bags across an open property may be less efficient than moving loose mulch from a well-positioned pile. Conversely, bags may simplify a small project behind a narrow gate where bulk material cannot be placed nearby.
