A cubic yard is a unit of volume. It represents a box measuring:

The calculation is:

That conversion is exact, not an estimate. A cubic yard occupies the same volume whether it contains mulch, compost, soil, gravel, or nothing at all. The exact equivalent and the practical purchase quantity are not always the same. One cubic yard equals exactly 13.5 bags containing 2 cubic feet each, but sealed bags normally must be purchased whole. To obtain at least 27 cubic feet, buy 14 bags.
Rounding down would leave you short:
13 bags × 2 cubic feet = 26 cubic feet
Rounding up provides slightly more than one cubic yard:

You may encounter a rounded estimating rule that places one cubic yard over about 100 square feet at approximately 3 inches deep. Step 1: Calculate the bed area

Keep the units compatible. Multiplying square feet directly by an unconverted number of inches does not produce cubic feet. Dividing the depth by 12—either separately or within the compact formula—handles that conversion.
Step 4: Calculate cubic feet
Multiply the square footage by the depth in feet, or use:
Cubic feet = square feet × depth in inches ÷ 12
For a 120-square-foot bed receiving 2 inches of new mulch:
120 × 2 ÷ 12 = 20 cubic feet

For a bulk order:

The following examples separate the calculated requirement from the quantity that may ultimately be purchased.
Example 1: A 200-square-foot bed at 3 inches deep
Calculate the required volume in cubic feet:

Then calculate the volume:

Estimating multiple or irregularly shaped beds
Landscaping rarely consists of one perfect rectangle. Measure each bed separately, divide complicated beds into manageable sections, and combine only the areas that will receive the same mulch depth.
Do not measure the entire property as one large rectangle unless every part of that area will receive mulch. Doing so can unintentionally include lawn, pavement, patios, buildings, or open spaces between planting beds.
For multiple beds:
- Label each bed or section.
- Calculate the square footage of each one.
- Add areas that will receive the same added depth.
- Apply the depth formula to the combined area.
- Calculate areas receiving different depths separately.
Suppose three rectangular sections measure:

For an L-shaped bed, divide the footprint into two rectangles rather than including the empty space inside the “L.” For curved or tapered beds, use simple shapes that reasonably follow the boundaries. Using an optional planning buffer
An optional 5% to 10% buffer may be useful when measurements are uncertain or the bed has irregular edges, uneven ground, or expected minor settling. This is a planning allowance, not a universal requirement; published mulch guidance likewise treats 5% to 10% as an optional contingency.
Apply the allowance only after calculating the base volume:
Volume with a 10% buffer = calculated volume × 1.10

30.5 × 1.10 = 33.55 cubic feet
For 2-cubic-foot bags:

Topping up an existing bed
When refreshing an established bed, calculate only the material you intend to add.
If a 300-square-foot bed needs another 1 inch of mulch:

Avoid purchasing mistakes: scoops, bag labels, and price comparisons
A cubic yard is a defined volume containing exactly 27 cubic feet. A supplier-defined scoop is different because scoop capacity is not standardized.
Some loader buckets hold less than one cubic yard, and different sellers may use the term in different ways. For bagged mulch:

Bulk mulch is not automatically cheaper or more suitable for every project. The better option can depend on:

- Available storage or drop space

Do not judge whether a vehicle can carry an order from truck-bed volume alone. Material condition and weight can vary, and a load that fits geometrically does not by itself establish carrying capacity.
