How to Smooth a Yard Without Burying the Lawn

Topsoil can level low areas in a yard, but it is not a universal one-pass fix. The right method depends on the depth of each depression, whether living turf remains, the direction of the overall slope, and—most importantly—why the ground became uneven.

For shallow irregularities, spread a thin layer of screened topsoil or a compatible topsoil-based blend and work it into the grass so the blades remain visible. For deeper ruts, lift the sod or rebuild the bare area instead of burying the lawn. Before Adding Topsoil, Find Out Why the Yard Is Uneven

Calculate How Many Cubic Yards You Need

Calculate material from the measured repair area and average depth:

Cubic yards = area in square feet × average depth in feet ÷ 27

If the area is rectangular, multiply length by width to find square footage. For an irregular depression, divide it into smaller measured zones, calculate each one separately, and add the results.
