What Actually Changes When a Stump Is Ground—and What Still Remains

A stump grinding before and after photo usually shows an obvious transformation: first a bulky stump and raised roots, then an open patch of ground. What the image may not show is just as important. Lower stump wood, the root ball, lateral roots, and other woody material may remain underground. The “after” area may also contain chips and mixed soil rather than planting soil, and it may still need hauling, backfill, grading, seed, sod, or other landscaping.

This article is a guide to interpreting before-and-after photos and defining a realistic project scope. It is not an independently documented project gallery: the available contractor galleries are self-published promotional examples and generally do not provide matched viewpoints, measured grinding depths, complete cleanup records, or long-term follow-up.

That distinction matters when comparing quotes. Grinding is one stage; cleanup and restoration are separate stages unless the written scope combines them. The realistic result depends on four questions:

  1. How deep will the contractor grind?
  2. Which visible or accessible surface roots are included?
  3. What will happen to the grindings and mixed soil?
  4. What will the area be used for afterward?

A temporarily flat patch is not necessarily a finished lawn, a suitable tree-planting site, or an adequate base for paving. The result should be judged against the complete written scope—including grinding depth, debris handling, drainage, site protection, and access-route condition—not solely by how the ground looks when the grinder leaves.

The realistic before-and-after sequence

A typical before condition includes a visible stump, an irregular root flare, raised or exposed surface roots, and ground that is difficult to mow or landscape. Some sites have several stumps, woody shrubs, partially buried logs, or a mound formed by clustered roots and soil. Fences, edging, rocks, steps, planting beds, windows, utilities, or structures may restrict machine access and the operator’s working area.

The immediate after condition is often less polished than a promotional image suggests. The visible stump has disappeared below the surrounding grade, but the work area may contain:

  • A depression or shallow excavation
  • Loose wood chips and shredded fiber
  • Soil mixed with grindings
  • Protruding root ends
  • Disturbed turf
  • More loose material than the original stump seemed likely to produce

That can represent completed grinding if it matches the agreed depth and debris scope. It should not, however, be accepted as successful merely because the stump is no longer visible. Nearby features, drainage, included roots, debris handling, and access-route conditions also need to match the contract.

Contractor galleries can help readers recognize possible site conditions, but they do not establish universal outcomes. One reviewed portfolio shows work around roots, fences, porches, windows, rocks, electrical lines, and other obstacles; it also credits a separate landscaping company for preparation or cleanup on some projects. The captions do not consistently document depth, final grading, elapsed time, or underground conditions, so the examples should be treated as promotional illustrations rather than independently verified case studies (view the contractor’s project captions).

In practice, there are four distinct after states.

After state 1: Grindings left on site

The stump is reduced to the agreed depth, but the resulting chips, shredded fiber, and mixed soil stay where they were produced. The work area may look larger and messier than the original stump. The homeowner remains responsible for moving material, filling the depression, and restoring the landscape.

After state 2: Grindings raked into a mound

The contractor consolidates loose material over the former stump. This creates a more orderly appearance than scattered debris, but it leaves a mound rather than a finished grade. Removing or redistributing the material may reveal that additional soil is needed.

After state 3: Grindings removed and topsoil added

Most loose woody debris is hauled away or moved to another location. Suitable soil is placed in the depression and graded toward the surrounding surface. This is closer to a landscape-ready result, although turf installation, watering, and later correction of low spots may remain separate responsibilities.

After state 4: Complete lawn restoration with seed or sod

Grinding, specified debris removal, soil replacement, grading, and turf installation are included. The site may appear finished when work ends, but new seed or sod still requires establishment care. Later settlement may also require top-dressing or repair.

These states are not interchangeable. A grinding-only quote should not be compared directly with a quote that includes hauling, imported soil, grading, and turf.

A credible published sequence would show the same site from the same viewpoint at several stages:

  1. Before work, with the stump and visible roots identified
  2. Immediately after grinding, before the debris is concealed
  3. After grindings are removed or consolidated
  4. After soil placement and grading
  5. After seed, sod, planting, or another finish is installed
  6. After rain, establishment, or a later inspection

Captions should identify the grinding depth, elapsed time, cleanup package, intended final use, and who performed each stage. If a landscaper or homeowner completed the finish work, the caption should not attribute the entire transformation to the grinder operator.

What stump grinding removes—and what remains underground

A stump grinder uses a rotating cutting wheel to reduce wood into small pieces. The operator moves the wheel across the stump in successive passes, working from the visible top into wood below the surrounding grade.

Commercial tree-service guides commonly describe grinding depths of approximately 6–12 inches below grade, while also noting that deeper work may be available. That is a reported practice range, not a universal standard or proof that a particular depth is suitable for every future use (compare the process and depth description).

Actual depth can depend on:

  • Machine design and cutting-wheel reach
  • Stump diameter, shape, and species
  • Soil, stone, and embedded debris
  • Access, slope, and operator positioning
  • Nearby utilities or structures
  • Stump height above grade
  • Included surface-root work
  • The intended use of the site

Standard grinding usually leaves material below the selected cutting depth. That may include lower stump wood, the lower root ball, large lateral roots, and finer roots extending beyond the grinder’s working area. An operator may follow prominent surface roots, but that does not mean the entire root system has been removed.

A publication cross-section should show the result in this order:

This is why “stump removed” can be misleading in a gallery caption. If the service was grinding, the visible stump was reduced below grade, but the lower root mass was not necessarily excavated. “Ground below grade” is the more precise description.

Deeper grinding may create more room for soil or reduce an obstruction near the surface. It still should not be described as complete root removal. Nor does greater depth guarantee that shoots will never emerge, because living lateral roots of some species can extend beyond the ground area reached by the machine. Cleanup determines what the after photo looks like

Grinding and cleanup are different operations. A basic price may cover the machine and operator but exclude hauling, imported soil, seed, sod, irrigation work, or landscape repair. Even “raking” can mean anything from consolidating chips beside the hole to producing a rough surface over it.

Common scopes include:

  • Leave all grindings where produced
  • Rake grindings into the depression
  • Mound grindings over the site
  • Spread chips elsewhere on the property
  • Relocate chips to a designated pile
  • Remove material only from above the surrounding grade
  • Haul away most loose debris
  • Remove debris and add soil
  • Provide soil, grading, seed, or sod

An industry forum discussion records practices ranging from leaving or mounding chips to offering topsoil, seed, or sod as a premium service. It is anecdotal rather than an industry standard, but it demonstrates why “cleanup included” is not specific enough for a contract (compare the cleanup practices described by contractors).

The debris is not necessarily clean, uniform mulch.

For a lawn or planting area, a typical restoration sequence is:

  1. Remove enough loose woody material to create room for suitable soil.
  2. Inspect the contracted area for wood protruding above the specified depth.
  3. Address any included surface roots.
  4. Place suitable fill or topsoil.
  5. Grade the area while considering existing drainage.
  6. Install the contracted seed, sod, or plants.
  7. Provide the required establishment care.
  8. Inspect later and add soil if a depression develops.

Reasonably clean grindings from a healthy tree may be useful as surface mulch in an appropriate location. That does not make every batch suitable for every bed. Soil-heavy debris, foreign material, or grindings from a suspect tree may require different handling. When disease is a concern, ask a qualified local tree professional or relevant authority rather than assuming the material should be reused.

Before approving a quote, decide where excess material will go. “Leave on site” could mean a pile beside the stump, chips raked into the depression, or material spread across a designated area. Relocation requires labor, while hauling may involve loading, transport, and disposal charges.

These are comparison categories, not universal package definitions. The quote should list actual tasks rather than rely on labels such as “standard cleanup” or “complete finish.”

How to restore the area for lawn, planting, gravel, or paving

The right restoration method depends on what will occupy the site. A former stump location does not require the same preparation for grass as it does for a tree, utility trench, patio, or structural element.

For a lawn

Remove enough chip-heavy material to create room for suitable soil. Fill and grade the depression in relation to the surrounding lawn and drainage pattern. Then install seed or sod and provide the required watering and establishment care.

Inspect the area after irrigation or rain. Ponding, a developing depression, or turf failure may indicate that the grade or soil profile needs attention. Correct a low spot with suitable soil rather than repeatedly filling it with loose grindings.

There is no universal waiting period before planting grass. A site that has been cleared, filled, and graded may be ready promptly. A hole filled mainly with chips is not equivalent to a prepared seedbed. Readiness depends on debris removal, soil depth, drainage, surface preparation, turf type, and weather.

For a flower bed or shallow-rooted planting

Assess how much of the upper layer consists of chips and shredded wood. Replace enough chip-heavy material with suitable soil for the intended plants, and confirm that the depression will not collect water.

Shallow-rooted plants can be easier to accommodate than a replacement tree because they require less unobstructed soil volume. A raised bed can add soil depth and make later grade adjustments easier. Plant selection should still reflect local light, moisture, climate, and soil conditions.

For native grasses or an adjustable landscape

Native grasses, ground covers, raised planting areas, and loose decorative gravel can be adaptable choices where later movement is possible. Unlike a rigid slab, these finishes can generally be lifted, replenished, or regraded.

Flexibility does not eliminate the need for preparation. Loose woody debris should not be mistaken for a finished base, and drainage and expected traffic still matter. A decorative gravel area and a vehicle parking surface have different performance demands.

For a replacement tree

Planting directly over the former stump is more difficult because the planting area may contain lower stump wood, major roots, chip-heavy fill, and material that can settle unevenly. The new tree needs an appropriate planting area rather than a small soil pocket surrounded by woody obstructions.

Offsetting the planting hole from the former stump is often more practical. If the exact location is essential, additional excavation of lower stump wood and major roots may be necessary before the site can be assessed for replanting. For pavers, concrete, structures, or underground utilities

Do not assume that standard grinding creates a clear excavation or a stable, load-bearing base. Lower stump wood and roots may remain below the cutting depth, while the upper area may contain loose organic debris.

Because the evidence here does not establish engineering criteria, preparation should be determined by the relevant qualified paving, utility, geotechnical, or structural professional. Depending on the project, that assessment may lead to additional excavation, debris removal, suitable compacted fill, drainage work, or relocation of the proposed feature.

Avoid rules such as “wait six months and then pave.” Time alone does not verify that the subgrade is suitable. Readiness depends on what was removed, what remains, the fill and compaction method, drainage, soil conditions, and intended load.

What can change months after the immediate result

An immediate after photo records one moment. It does not establish the long-term grade.

Buried wood can shrink as it decomposes, and loosely placed fill can consolidate. Either condition may contribute to a depression, soft area, or uneven lawn. The amount and timing vary with stump size, species, soil, moisture, remaining wood, grinding depth, and restoration method; a commercial landscaping guide likewise describes gradual settlement as variable rather than guaranteed on a fixed schedule (see the discussion of post-grinding settlement).

A small stump under a well-prepared repair may produce little visible change. A large stump with substantial lower wood beneath a shallow restoration may require later top-dressing. The contract should therefore state whether later settlement is homeowner maintenance, covered follow-up work, or a separately priced service.

Mushrooms may appear where buried wood is decomposing. Their presence alone does not establish that grinding was performed incorrectly. Inspect the grade, drainage, turf, and remaining debris rather than treating fungal growth by itself as proof of defective work.

New shoots are a different issue. Some species can produce suckers from roots outside the area reached by the grinder. Check the site periodically, especially:

  • After substantial rain
  • During the next active growing season
  • While new turf is establishing
  • Before installing a permanent feature

Look for ponding, depressions, soft soil, turf failure, exposed root ends, new shoots, or movement in an adjustable surface. Early corrections are usually easier to coordinate than repairs after a rigid feature has been installed.

For documented case reporting, useful photo checkpoints would be approximately 30 days, six months, and one year. These are documentation milestones, not predictions of when settlement or regrowth will occur. Each image should use the original viewpoint and record any added soil, reseeding, shoot removal, or drainage work.

Preparing the yard and protecting nearby features

Machine dimensions and operating requirements vary. Ask the contractor to confirm the required gate width, access route, turning room, overhead clearance, slope limitations, and work-zone size for the specific machine. Do not rely on a generic clearance distance.

Before the operator arrives, move vulnerable items where practical:

  • Decorations and planters
  • Toys and outdoor furniture
  • Hoses and temporary irrigation
  • Loose edging
  • Landscape fabric near exposed roots
  • Small plants to be preserved
  • Movable lights
  • Pet equipment
  • Objects hidden by leaves or vegetation

Ask how far the operator intends to follow visible surface roots. A price covering the central stump may not include roots extending into the lawn, bed, paving, or fence line. The contractor should identify the included root area and explain what needs to be cleared around it.

Tell the contractor about known private lines and buried materials even if they appear to be away from the trunk. Identify old fence wire, metal stakes, concrete, rocks, and buried landscape materials. Do not probe or excavate around marked services without first confirming an appropriate method with the responsible utility or qualified contractor.

Fences, porches, windows, retaining walls, steps, rocks, and established planting can affect machine access, cutting depth, chip containment, time, and price. Contractor portfolios document the use of containment panels and added protection near windows and pedestrian areas, but such measures reduce risk rather than proving that damage is impossible.

Before work begins, photograph:

  • The stump and visible roots
  • The access route
  • Utility markings
  • Irrigation heads and known private lines
  • Fences, walls, windows, and nearby structures
  • Existing turf, beds, paving, and drainage conditions
  • Gates and other restricted access points

These images create a shared record of the original condition. They can also help with work planning and distinguish existing damage from later disturbance.

What to put in the written grinding and restoration scope

A useful quote describes the result in observable terms. “Grind stump and clean up” leaves too much open to interpretation.

The written scope should cover:

  • Number of stumps
  • Measured diameter and the measurement method
  • Approximate height above grade
  • Species, if known
  • Included visible or accessible surface roots
  • Grinding depth relative to surrounding grade
  • Work-zone and access constraints
  • Known rocks, metal, utilities, irrigation, and structures
  • Intended future use of each location
  • Responsibility for identifying private lines
  • Planned protection for nearby features

Chip handling should be explicit. State whether grindings will be:

  • Left where produced
  • Raked into the depression
  • Mounded over the site
  • Spread in a designated area
  • Relocated to a specified pile
  • Partially removed
  • Substantially hauled away

Separate the grinding price from optional work such as additional root grinding, hauling, imported soil, final grading, seed, sod, irrigation work, access repair, and return visits. This prevents a limited grinding-only quote from appearing equivalent to a restoration package.

The agreement should also assign responsibility for:

  • Locating private irrigation and cables
  • Protecting windows, fences, walls, paving, and planting
  • Reviewing or repairing access-route disturbance
  • Maintaining agreed drainage during final grading
  • Watering and turf establishment
  • Addressing later settlement
  • Managing new shoots or newly exposed roots
  • Returning if the specified grinding depth was not achieved

Cost can vary with stump diameter, species or wood density, stump count, access, soil and rock conditions, slope, requested depth, surface roots, proximity to obstacles, debris volume, and cleanup scope. General online prices should not be treated as a prediction for a particular property.

Use this acceptance checklist before final sign-off:

Acceptance should match the purchased service. Grinding-only work should be evaluated as grinding-only work, not as an unfinished restoration package the homeowner did not buy.

Hypothetical scope example

Grind one measured stump to the specified depth below surrounding grade within the marked central area; grind the three identified surface roots to the agreed limits; use containment near the adjacent window; relocate loose grindings to the designated rear-yard pile; import suitable soil and rough-grade the depression for lawn restoration. Seed, irrigation repair, and future settlement correction are excluded.

This example is not a claim about an actual project. It shows how diameter, depth, root limits, protection, chip handling, restoration, and exclusions can be stated in one scope.

Grinding versus full stump removal

Grinding reduces visible stump wood to a selected depth. Full removal uses digging, pulling, cutting, or excavation to remove the stump and a larger portion of the root mass.

The methods create different levels of disturbance. Grinding usually concentrates work around the stump and leaves a smaller surface area to restore. Excavation creates a larger hole and can disturb more turf, soil, roots, and nearby landscaping. That excavation then requires an appropriate backfill and grading plan.

Full removal should not be described as extracting every fine root. Major roots and the root ball may be removed while smaller or more distant roots remain. The practical distinction is the amount of stump and root mass removed for the intended use.

Grinding is often compatible with lawn repair, flowers, ground cover, and other light landscaping after suitable cleanup. Additional excavation deserves consideration when the exact location is intended for:

  • A replacement tree
  • An underground utility route
  • Permanent paving
  • Structural work
  • Other construction requiring a clear or specifically prepared subgrade

Deeper grinding or targeted root work may bridge part of the gap. More depth can create room for restoration soil, while individual surface roots can be addressed where they interfere with grading. Neither operation should be described as full excavation.

Price and duration comparisons should remain broad. Region, access, equipment, stump characteristics, disposal, excavation, and restoration scope can materially change the balance. The method should be selected for the intended use rather than presented as universally sufficient or universally necessary.

How to judge a credible before-and-after example

First ask whether the photos genuinely show the same site. Look for matching fences, paving, buildings, trees, and fixed landscape features. Changes in viewpoint, lens, season, vegetation, or light can make an after area appear larger, cleaner, or flatter.

Then look for project-specific information:

  • Stump diameter
  • Species, if known
  • Measured grinding depth
  • Included surface-root area
  • Machine access requirements
  • Slope and soil conditions
  • Nearby obstacles and protections
  • Cleanup package
  • Who supplied and placed soil
  • Whether seed, sod, gravel, or paving was installed
  • Intended final use
  • Time between images

A gallery with polished images but no depth, scope, or timing information demonstrates appearance, not the complete result. One reviewed gallery repeatedly describes areas as ready for grass or landscaping but supplies no project-specific depths, cleanup methods, costs, measurements, or long-term follow-up (view the promotional gallery captions).

Captions should distinguish observations from opinions. “Visible stump ground below grade and loose chips removed” is useful. “Perfectly removed,” “completely gone,” or “clean, level result” is subjective unless the terms are defined and supported by measurements.

Find out when the after image was taken:

  • Immediately after grinding
  • After chips were raked
  • After debris was hauled away
  • After soil was imported and graded
  • After seed or sod was installed
  • After rainfall or a growing season

Also ask who completed the visible work. The grinder operator may have reduced the stump while a landscaper created the lawn. Both contributions can be legitimate, but the caption should attribute them accurately.

Claims of damage-free work near utilities, windows, fences, or paving should be treated as self-reported unless independently documented. The same caution applies to exact chip-volume claims and descriptions such as “completely removed.”

The strongest sequence would show:

  1. The original stump and roots
  2. Utility markings and nearby obstacles
  3. The grinder working
  4. The resulting chip pile
  5. The cleared depression
  6. Remaining conditions where visible
  7. Soil placement and grading
  8. The immediate finished surface
  9. Follow-up after rain and landscape establishment

Credible examples should also acknowledge imperfect outcomes. Excess chips, exposed roots, low spots, ponding, shoots, failed turf, or movement in an adjustable surface help readers understand what a polished final image may omit.

A trustworthy comparison answers more than “Is the stump visible?” It explains what was ground, what remained, how debris was handled, who restored the site, and whether the result held up.

Can I plant grass immediately after stump grinding?

Possibly—but not merely because the grinder has finished. First remove enough excess woody debris, add suitable soil, establish the intended grade, and prepare the surface for seed or sod. If those steps are complete, an arbitrary waiting period may not be necessary.

A mound of chips or a depression filled mainly with grindings is not a prepared seedbed. Timing depends on soil depth, drainage, surface preparation, turf type, and weather. Monitor the repair and add soil if a low spot develops.

Do tree roots keep growing or sprout after the stump is ground?

Grinding removes the central stump but leaves roots outside or below the grinding area. Some species can produce shoots from surviving roots, so grinding is not a universal guarantee against regrowth.

If shoots appear, identify the species and obtain appropriate management advice. Their presence does not by itself prove that the contractor failed to reach the agreed grinding depth.

Should stump grindings be removed or used as mulch?

It depends on their condition and the restoration plan.

For lawn or planting restoration, removing enough chip-heavy material creates room for suitable soil and makes grading easier to control. Cleaner grindings from a healthy tree may instead be useful as surface mulch elsewhere.

Do not assume that all grindings are equivalent to commercial mulch. They may contain soil, stones, old wood, or foreign debris. The quote should state whether the contractor will leave, relocate, or haul them.

Can I plant another tree in the exact same location?

Sometimes, but standard grinding may leave lower stump wood and major roots where the new planting area is needed. Chip-heavy fill and later settlement can create additional complications.

Judge quotes and photos by those details—not by an unlabeled image of a temporarily flat patch of ground.
