A stump grinding attachment for a skid steer makes sense when you already have a compatible loader, know how to operate it, have several accessible stumps, and can handle the chips. If you’re renting both machines for one stump, compare the complete loader-and-attachment cost with a dedicated grinder rental and a contractor quote before booking. Physical mounting compatibility alone is not enough.
Select the grinder and your verification status; use the result to identify what must be settled before booking.
Booking Readiness Check
Get supplier confirmation of the exact loader, grinder and motor combination, then verify safe access using complete machine dimensions.
This check does not certify compatibility, safe operation or utility clearance.Model-Specific Checks
AP-SSG2524: 17–32 GPM; 3,500 PSI maximum; separate case drain. Electric-over-hydraulic controls. Keep skid shoes on the ground and do not move the loader forward or backward while cutting.
Baumalight S18: Case drain not required for S450; recommended for S550 and S650. No electrical connection. Flow and pressure figures are not supplied here; confirm the exact motor requirements with the supplier.
For another model, use its own manual and motor specifications; neither example establishes its requirements.

Match Auxiliary Hydraulics Before Wheel Size
Start with the loader’s auxiliary hydraulics—not engine horsepower or the quick-attach plate. Give the supplier your loader’s exact model, hydraulic package and attachment-control configuration. Have them confirm compatibility with the grinder’s exact model and motor option.
| Check | Required Confirmation |
|---|---|
| Auxiliary flow, in GPM | The selected loader mode is within the motor’s approved range. |
| Hydraulic pressure, in PSI | Available pressure suits the motor and attachment without exceeding their ratings. |
| Case drain | The motor’s drain requirements and a suitable loader connection. |
| Couplers and hoses | Correct size, type, routing and clearance throughout movement. |
| Electrical controls | Compatible harness or approved controller for powered functions. |
| Weight and mounting | Correct hitch, capacity, stability and required ballast. |
“Standard flow” and “high flow” are not substitutes for numbers. The Kubota by Land Pride AP-SSG2524 manual lists 17–32 GPM and a 3,500 PSI maximum pressure rating. These figures apply to that attachment, not every skid-steer grinder. The manual also specifies a separate case-drain connection and instructs owners to check the loader’s rated capacities. AP-SSG2524 operator’s manual, dated December 4, 2025
Motor choice matters even within one model. Baumalight’s S18 chart lists a case drain as not required for the S450 motor, but recommended for the S550 and S650. Two used S18 attachments may therefore have different connection requirements. Baumalight S18 specifications
A missing case-drain connection or incompatible control harness is a setup problem to resolve before delivery, not something to discover beside the stump. Ask the supplier to identify the required connections on the actual loader.
Cutting Controls Change How You Operate
Similar wheel sizes do not mean similar operating methods.
The Baumalight S18 requires no electrical connection and diverts no hydraulic flow to a swing cylinder. Have its positioning and feeding method demonstrated on the actual loader before renting it.
The AP-SSG2524 uses electric-over-hydraulic controls with a 55-degree cutting arc. Its manual calls for keeping the skid shoes firmly on the ground and not moving the loader forward or backward while cutting.
Follow the attachment’s own operating instructions rather than copying a video of another design. A technique suited to a simpler, non-powered-swing attachment may conflict with the instructions for an articulated grinder.
| Specification | Baumalight S18 | AP-SSG2524 |
|---|---|---|
| Listed weight | 642 lb, shipping | 540 lb, overall |
| Cutting wheel | 24-inch rotor | 23¾-inch wheel |
| Below-ground depth | 10 inches | 8-inch maximum |
The weights use different reporting bases. Confirm configured operating weight before planning transport or checking loader capacity. These manufacturer specifications illustrate the choices; they are not a tested performance ranking. S18 specification table; AP-SSG2524 specification table
Check the view from the seat, too. Bobcat uses a 90-degree-angle mount to improve visibility of its cutting area. That feature is worth assessing during a demonstration, but it does not establish compatibility with your loader. Bobcat stump grinder attachment
Yard Access Can Rule Out the Loader
Measure the narrowest gate, turns between buildings, overhead clearance and working space around the stump. Compare those measurements with the complete loader-and-attachment dimensions, not the mounting-plate width.
If the combination cannot reach and work around the stump safely, compare a self-propelled stump grinder selected by access and controls. A compatible hydraulic system does not solve a narrow entrance or inadequate maneuvering room.
Before requesting prices, define the finished job: whether you need only the raised stump removed or visible lateral roots ground as well; the required depth below surrounding grade; and whether chips will stay, be hauled away or be replaced with soil. Tell the supplier or contractor whether the next use is lawn, a planting bed or construction.
Grinding below grade is not complete root-system excavation. Iowa State Extension describes professional grinding as typically reaching 8–12 inches and chewing away the stump and large lateral roots. It also notes that chip removal and filling are commonly separate services. That typical depth is not a guarantee that a particular attachment can reach it. Iowa State Extension stump-removal guidance
For construction, establish the project’s excavation requirements before choosing a grinder. For replanting, budget for removing concentrated grindings and adding suitable soil rather than treating a chip-filled hole as finished ground. See when you can plant after stump grinding.
Compare Costs for the Same Finished Job
Request comparable totals for an attachment rental, including a loader if needed; a dedicated grinder rental; and professional grinding to the same depth and cleanup scope. The sources here do not provide rental or purchase prices, so there is no supported dollar break-even figure.
For the attachment option, total rental, loader rental if needed, delivery or hauling, fuel, setup parts, applicable damage or tooth charges, cleanup, soil and surface restoration.
Ask about included operating hours, extra-day charges and tooth-damage terms. A rental quote that excludes hauling and cleanup is not directly comparable with a contractor quote that includes them.
If buying, request a delivered, ready-to-operate quote identifying the motor, couplers, control harness and replacement-tooth costs. A low attachment-only price leaves unanswered whether you can operate it on your machine without additional parts.
Owning the loader makes attachment rental worth investigating; it does not make purchase automatically economical. Use the rental-versus-hiring break-even guide to compare the same finished result.
Utility Locating and Training Come Before Cutting
Arrange buried-utility locating before grinding. In the U.S., contact 811 and ask how close you may work to the marks; the AP-SSG2524 manual includes both instructions.
Ask your local center what is covered, and arrange separate locating for private lines where needed. Indiana 811 warns that its member utilities do not mark some privately owned lines. That warning describes Indiana’s service coverage; confirm coverage where your stump is located.
Inspect for stones, wire and other foreign material. Require model-specific training, intact guards and shields, the specified operator protection, and an exclusion area for people and pets.
Before inspection or service, lower the attachment to a firm, level surface and follow both the loader and attachment manuals’ shutdown and lockout procedures. Wait for moving parts to stop. Baumalight’s March 2026 S24/S28 manual explicitly describes those grinders as equipment for experienced, trained operators—not a shortcut around learning to operate a skid steer. Baumalight S24/S28 operator’s manual
Before paying, have the supplier put the loader model, grinder model and motor, hydraulic connections, control arrangement and included setup on the quote. That written match gives you something to verify; “fits most skid steers” does not.
