A root ball is the compact mass of roots and associated soil or growing medium at a plant’s base. To plant it correctly, expose the true root flare, inspect and correct substantial root defects, keep the roots moist, and set the ball on firm soil at the appropriate grade. Do not assume the nursery soil line marks the correct planting depth.
Root ball basics: the short answer
The root ball carries the roots that must support a tree or shrub as it establishes in a new site. Its moisture, integrity, size, root structure, and final position can all affect establishment. A dry or broken ball has less capacity to support the plant. A deeply planted ball can leave the trunk flare buried, while a pot-shaped mass of circling roots may continue developing in a defective pattern.
“Rootball” is an accepted alternative spelling, but “root ball” is more common and is used throughout this guide. Merriam-Webster defines a root ball as the compact mass of roots and soil formed by a plant and lists “rootball” as a less common spelling in its root ball dictionary entry.
The term can apply to trees, shrubs, perennials, annuals, and other plants. This guide focuses on landscape trees and shrubs sold in containers or as balled-and-burlapped stock.
A horticultural root ball is not the root system left in the ground after stump removal. It is also unrelated to plastic propagation products marketed as “rooting balls” or “air-layering balls.”
Identify the stock type before touching the roots
Do not prepare every plant in the same way. First determine how it was produced and packaged.

Container-grown roots frequently conform to the inside of the pot. Some peripheral root growth is normal, but roots may become tangled, matted, repeatedly circle the ball, or turn back toward the trunk. These patterns deserve closer inspection because they may not correct themselves after planting.
That does not mean every container root ball should be torn apart. If a healthy plant slips from its pot without substantial circling, matting, or girdling roots, preserve most of the ball. Unnecessary disturbance sacrifices functioning roots without correcting a meaningful defect.
A balled-and-burlapped, or B&B, plant has been dug from a field with soil around part of its root system. The soil ball must remain firm, moist, and supported. Lift the plant from beneath the ball—never by its trunk, branches, or stems. Field-potted plants can look like ordinary container stock, but the pot contains a harvested field-soil ball. Treating that ball like loose potting medium could cause it to break apart. Bare-root plants have no comparable soil ball to preserve.
Tree-spaded plants involve large, mechanically cut root systems. Appropriate ball size and handling depend on species, plant condition, season, irrigation, and other project variables. Do not transfer ordinary container-root instructions to a large tree-spade project.
Inspect the root ball before buying or planting
Inspect the plant at the nursery when possible and repeat the check after removing the container or exposing the top of the ball. Ask permission before slipping a plant out of its pot at a retail nursery.
Use this checklist:
- Moisture: The ball should be moist, not powder-dry, waterlogged, or standing in water.
- Firmness: A B&B soil ball should hold together rather than crumble or shift.
- Trunk stability: The trunk should not wobble independently inside the ball.
- Odor: A foul or sour smell requires closer scrutiny.
- Color: Extensive dark brown or black discoloration warrants further inspection.
- Visible damage: Look for torn, crushed, broken, dead, or decaying roots.
- Proportional size: Question a ball that appears unusually small compared with the trunk and canopy.
- Root flare: Locate the widening trunk base and first structural roots.
- Side roots: Check for roots repeatedly circling the perimeter.
- Bottom roots: Look for a dense mat or roots looping beneath the ball.
- Girdling patterns: Watch for roots crossing back toward or pressing against the trunk.
Odor or dark coloration alone does not prove that a plant is dead. Growing medium, saturation, species, and recent handling can affect appearance. Consider these warning signs alongside root texture, plant vigor, moisture, and structural condition.
Finding the root flare is essential. Nursery soil or potting medium may conceal the trunk base and upper structural roots. Gently remove material from the top until you find where the trunk broadens and the first substantial roots emerge. That point—not the apparent nursery soil surface—determines planting depth.
For container stock, inspect the sides and bottom. A few fine roots at the edge are different from multiple woody roots circling the ball or crossing toward the trunk. For B&B stock, prioritize ball integrity: dryness, crumbling soil, damaged wrapping, and a trunk that moves within the ball can indicate root damage.
Utah State University Extension gives a rule of thumb of 10 to 12 inches of root-system, container, or root-ball diameter for each inch of trunk caliper. It also warns that the nursery soil line may be above the true root collar. This ratio is a screening tool, not a universal requirement or an ANSI minimum; species, production method, stock form, and project specifications can justify different dimensions. Reject the plant—or seek an assessment from a qualified nursery professional or arborist—when defects are severe.
Prepare the roots according to what you find
Use a condition-based rule: leave a healthy, non-root-bound ball mostly intact; intervene when roots are extensively circling, girdling, dead, diseased, or damaged.
1. Minor peripheral roots
If only a few flexible roots turn along the pot wall, gently redirect them outward where practical. Make clean cuts on roots that cannot be redirected without tearing.
Do not pull apart the entire root ball simply to make it look loose. The goal is to correct defective root direction while retaining as much healthy, functioning root tissue as practical.
2. Extensive circling roots
Limited teasing may not be enough when a dense outer layer repeatedly follows the shape of the pot. Options include selectively pruning the most problematic roots or making several vertical cuts around the outside of the ball.
University of Arkansas Extension describes three or four top-to-bottom cuts approximately 1 to 2 inches deep for extensive circling roots. The number and depth should still be adjusted to the size of the ball and the actual location of the defective roots rather than applied mechanically to every plant. The purpose is to interrupt the strongest circular pattern and create root ends from which new growth can extend into the surrounding soil. It is not to dismantle or mutilate the entire ball.
3. Major girdling or hidden structural defects
Roots that cross the trunk, compress its base, or circle beneath several layers of medium require closer judgment. Selective pruning may be appropriate if the defective root can be removed without sacrificing too much of the functioning root system. Severe defects in a large specimen may justify rejecting the plant instead.
Exterior shaving—removing a thin layer from the sides and bottom—is a more aggressive way to eliminate a dense mat of circling roots. Root washing can reveal defects hidden inside potting medium, but it is debated because it removes supporting material and increases disturbance. Small, vigorous plants may tolerate extensive correction more readily than large trees.
No one technique—slicing, shaving, washing, teasing, or aggressive pruning—belongs on every root ball. Match the intervention to the defect.
Keep the roots and growing medium moist while you work. Shade the ball, limit exposure, and re-moisten it as needed, but do not leave it submerged or standing in water.
Measure the hole from the exposed root flare
Expose the root flare before measuring the hole. Measure vertically from the flare or first structural roots to the base of the root ball. That is the maximum hole depth. The original nursery soil surface may be too high to use as a reference.
Make the hole wide and shallow. A general range is approximately 1.5 to 3 times the root-ball width, depending on soil structure and site conditions. Wider excavation can be useful in dense or compacted soil because the roots must eventually grow beyond the original ball. University of Maryland Extension recommends measuring depth from the exposed flare, digging no deeper than the ball, and making the hole at least twice as wide in its home-landscape planting instructions.
Do not dig below the measured flare-to-base depth. Leave the soil directly beneath the root ball firm and undisturbed. If a hole is dug too deeply and refilled with loose soil, the ball can settle and leave the flare below grade.
In ordinary, well-drained soil:
- Set the bottom of the root flare at or slightly above the surrounding grade.
- Keep the root ball level and stable.
- Widen the hole rather than making it deeper.
In compacted or poorly drained soil, use a wider, shallower hole and leave more of the root ball above the existing grade. Taper soil over the exposed sides to form a broad transition, but do not cover the root flare or pile soil against the trunk.
On a slope, the uphill side of the root ball can meet the existing soil level while the downhill side remains above the surrounding grade. Build a stable, tapered transition on the downhill side instead of excavating deeply enough to bury the uphill flare.

Remove packaging without collapsing the soil ball
Use a risk-based sequence. First lower the supported root ball into the prepared hole and confirm its height, orientation, and stability. Then remove or cut back packaging. Stripping a fragile B&B ball before placement can cause the soil to collapse and damage harvested roots.

For container-grown plants, remove the container completely. Do not leave a cut pot bottom or sidewall around the roots.
On B&B stock, remove cords, twine, rope, nails, and ties from around the trunk or root flare. Materials left tight against expanding wood can become obstructions. Remove synthetic or decay-resistant wrapping as fully as ball stability permits because roots will not grow through it normally.
Recommendations differ for natural burlap and wire baskets. University of Maryland Extension advises removing cords and either removing burlap completely or cutting it away from at least the upper portion of the positioned ball. It also advises removing as much synthetic wrapping as possible.
Arkansas Extension takes a more conservative approach where extensive removal could destabilize the soil ball: natural burlap may remain along the sides, while material at the top and around the trunk should be removed. Its guidance also describes the continuing disagreement over wire baskets and recommends addressing them only after the ball has been placed and stabilized.
The practical middle ground is to position the ball first, then remove or cut back material that covers the top, contacts the trunk, crosses the flare, or obstructs outward root growth. Do not claim that every wire basket will girdle roots, but do not assume every basket is harmless either. Basket design, ball stability, root development, and project specifications can change the decision.
If lower packaging cannot be removed without moving or collapsing the ball, cut away accessible upper sections and avoid unnecessary handling.
Backfill, water, and check the final grade
Backfill primarily with loosened native soil removed from the hole. Break up large clods and work the soil around the sides without pounding it into a hard mass. Heavily amending only the planting hole can create an abrupt difference in texture and moisture behavior between the hole and the surrounding soil.
Do not place additional soil over the top of the root ball. Any excess nursery medium that covered the flare should already have been removed. Backfill should meet the sides of the ball while leaving the flare visible.
Water the root ball and surrounding backfill thoroughly after planting.
There is no reliable universal schedule such as “water once a week” for every new tree. Frequency and volume depend on root-ball size, soil texture, drainage, rainfall, species, season, exposure, and current moisture. Check below the surface rather than judging by appearance alone, and avoid both prolonged saturation and drying.
Apply mulch in a shallow, broad layer and keep it away from direct contact with the trunk. Do not form a mulch volcano or cover the root flare. Utah State University’s guidance likewise recommends native-soil backfill, no added soil over the ball, and thorough watering of both the ball and surrounding soil.
Before leaving the site, verify five points:
- The root flare is visible at or slightly above the intended grade.
- The root ball is stable and does not rock in the hole.
- No trunk ties remain around the stem or flare.
- No added soil covers the top of the root ball.
- Moisture has been checked in both the ball and adjacent soil.
Correct planting reduces avoidable stress, but it cannot guarantee freedom from transplant shock or decline. Plant condition, root loss, weather, drainage, species suitability, and aftercare still affect the outcome.
When nursery standards matter
ANSI Z60.2-2025, the American Standard for Nursery Stock, addresses nursery-stock terminology and practices involving root-ball diameter, depth, centering, wrapping, supporting devices, and the relationship between plant size and ball size. The available summary material does not contain the dimensional tables needed to quote exact minimum ball sizes, so those figures should be taken from the complete current ANSI Z60.2 nursery-stock standard.
Do not substitute a regional extension rule of thumb for a contractual ANSI requirement. Exact dimensions can depend on plant class and measurement method. Landscape professionals, nursery buyers, designers, inspectors, and anyone purchasing under a written specification should consult the full current standard and the applicable project documents.
Compliance with an American National Standard is generally voluntary. Parties to a commercial transaction can expressly agree that the standard applies, including through a contract, purchasing document, or project specification.
The central decision rule is straightforward: expose the true root flare, inspect the roots, preserve a sound ball, correct only meaningful defects, and plant on firm soil at or slightly above grade. Stock type, drainage, soil, climate, species, and ball stability can change the details; contractual nursery sizing should be checked against the complete current edition of ANSI Z60.2.
