A healthy, structurally sound ash is usually cheaper to treat than remove over the next decade: professional injections at about $200 every two years total roughly $1,000 for five cycles, compared with a commonly cited $1,500–$3,000-plus bill for removing and stump-grinding a mature shade tree. That verdict does not apply to a hazardous, structurally defective, badly declining, or poorly placed ash. Why The Received Wisdom Favors Removal

The case for removal is not irrational. Emerald ash borer has killed ash across large areas, native ash lack natural resistance, and insecticide treatment is a continuing obligation rather than a cure. Removal also ends future treatment payments and may be required for trees that can no longer distribute insecticide effectively.

That message became especially prominent as emerald ash borer reached new territory. After Washington’s first confirmed detection in Vancouver on August 3, 2026, state officials said there was no treatment or prevention method available to protect native ash species lacking the natural defenses needed to survive infestation (Washington detection report). Quarantines and wood-movement restrictions also focus public attention on containment and removal.

The warning is sound at the population level: applied insecticide does not give a species inheritable resistance, eliminate the pest, or provide permanent immunity. It also does not mean every healthy landscape ash must immediately come down.

During Colorado’s August 2026 detections, Parker town forester Erik Stadsvold described injection as the effective option, while arborist Jacob Griffiths put the price at around $200 depending on tree size, repeated every two years. The same coverage reserved prompt removal for infected trees already in serious decline (Colorado treatment report).

The practical distinction is between a healthy individual tree that can still be protected and a declining or unsafe tree for which treatment is no longer suitable.

Tree Condition Comes Before The Cost Comparison

Do not let a low injection quote overrule a safety assessment. Treatment controls an insect; it cannot repair decay, restore dead roots, close a trunk crack, or strengthen a weak union.

A commonly used canopy-loss screen sorts trees this way:

These are screening bands, not guarantees. A tree with less than 30% canopy loss can still be unsafe, while an exact percentage estimated from a photograph is not enough to commit to years of treatment.

Live canopy matters because insecticide must move through functioning vascular tissue. As emerald ash borer damage advances, the tree becomes less able to distribute treatment. Wisconsin forestry guidance likewise identifies poor health, structural problems, unsuitable placement, and substantial canopy loss as reasons not to retain a tree (Wisconsin DNR yard-tree guidance).

An on-site assessment should look for trunk cracks, large cavities, extensive decay, dead major limbs, weak co-dominant stems, root instability, a recently changing lean, and conflicts with buildings, roads or utilities. Any of those can override favorable canopy numbers.

A strong treatment candidate is a confirmed ash that is healthy or only lightly affected, structurally sound, well placed, and valuable for shade, privacy or mature canopy. Its owner must also be willing to maintain the application schedule.

A weak candidate is severely thinned, structurally defective, unhealthy for additional reasons, easily replaced, or growing where its increasing size will create a lasting conflict. A small healthy ash may be biologically treatable but financially unconvincing.

Ten Years Of Treatment Is About $1,000 At The Reported Rate

Emerald ash borer treatment is recurring protection. Using the Colorado figure, a $200 application with two years of protection annualizes to about $100 per year. Five applications cover a 10-year schedule, producing the headline total of roughly $1,000.

University of Wisconsin guidance provides wider context. It says professional treatment may cost $200 or more. Certain homeowner-applied soil treatments for a roughly 10-inch-diameter tree may cost about $20–$50 per year. Most homeowner treatments are annual, while professional emamectin-benzoate injections are generally labeled for two years of protection (University of Wisconsin treatment guidance).

Those methods are not interchangeable. Product eligibility, diameter limits, application method, environmental conditions, pesticide law and the label all control what can be used. Follow the label and applicable local requirements rather than borrowing another product’s interval.

A commercial pricing method places two-year trunk-injection cycles at approximately $7–$16 per diameter inch. That is a location-dependent estimate rather than a national average. It does show why two neighbors may receive different prices for trees of different sizes.

Diameter at breast height, or DBH, is normally calculated by measuring trunk circumference 4.5 feet above grade and dividing by 3.14. A circumference of 56.5 inches is approximately 18 inches DBH. Multi-stemmed trees, sloping ground and trunks that swell or branch near the measuring point require the provider to explain the measurement method.

A usable proposal states the product, active ingredient, application method, measured DBH, price per application and supported protection interval. Without both the price and interval, there is no defensible annualized cost.

A Complete Removal Quote Is More Than Cutting The Trunk

Removal may eliminate recurring treatment, but quotes often cover different scopes. One company may haul every log and grind the stump. Another may leave logs, chips, grindings and a low stump behind.

Wisconsin guidance says removal may cost several hundred dollars for a tree under 25 feet and $1,000 or more for a larger tree. Structures and power lines can raise the price, while dead ash can become brittle and harder to remove safely (University of Wisconsin treatment guidance).

The brief’s mature-tree comparison is $1,500–$3,000-plus for removal and stump grinding. A separate commercial guide illustrates the effect of diameter with estimates of $800–$1,500 for removing and handling the stump of a 12-inch tree and $1,800–$3,600 for a 24-inch tree. Access, condition, rigging and regional labor can move an actual quote substantially.

Ask contractors to separate these items:

  1. Dismantling the standing tree
  2. Lift, crane or special rigging
  3. Log and brush hauling
  4. Chipping and final cleanup
  5. Stump grinding and grinding depth
  6. Grindings removal or spreading
  7. Major root work
  8. Permits and traffic control
  9. Replacement planting
  10. Soil, lawn or hardscape restoration

Stump grinding is performed after the standing tree is removed and may be excluded from the main price. Broad homeowner costs commonly run $100–$400 per stump, but that is not an ash-removal quote and cannot price a specific property (stump-grinding cost overview).

Grinding also is not whole-root excavation. It reduces the stump below grade but ordinarily leaves much of the root system in place. Construction, paving, drainage work or immediate planting in the same spot may require a different scope.

The Break-Even Year Is A Cash Crossover, Not A Lifetime Guarantee

The preliminary calculation is straightforward: divide the complete remove-now total by annualized treatment cost.

At $200 every two years, annualized treatment is $100. If complete removal costs $1,500, cumulative treatment payments reach that figure at approximately year 15.

These figures assume a constant annualized rate. They exclude tree growth, inspection costs, price changes, interruptions and eventual removal.

That last omission matters. Successful treatment does not guarantee that the tree will never need removal. A fuller treatment scenario consists of cumulative injections, inspections and maintenance, followed by possible eventual removal and stump work. The remove-now scenario includes removal, stump work, replacement and restoration now.

The timing differs even when nominal totals eventually match. Treatment spreads spending over multiple years and preserves mature canopy during that period. Removal requires a larger immediate payment but ends the injection schedule. A rigorous model would discount future spending to present value; the draft evidence supplies no universal discount rate or future inflation figure.

Published studies confirm that assumptions change the result. A Canadian model found treatment could retain a financial advantage for a substantial period under its defaults, but it used older Canadian prices, discounted future expenses and allowed tree benefits to be counted (Canadian treatment-and-removal model).

A 25-year Indianapolis municipal model found that treating every ash preserved the most canopy but eventually produced the highest total cost among its modeled strategies. Treatment Wins Most Clearly For A Valuable Mature Ash

A healthy mature ash that shades a home, patio or heavily used yard is the strongest financial case for treatment. At the reported $200 two-year rate, retaining it for 10 years costs about $1,000 before inspection or maintenance charges. That is below the cited $1,500–$3,000-plus mature-tree removal and stump-grinding range, and the property keeps its established canopy.

Shade, privacy, appearance and stormwater effects have value, but the draft evidence does not provide a defensible universal dollar figure for them. Keep those benefits separate from contractor invoices rather than claiming guaranteed energy or property-value savings.

A small, poorly placed ash points the other way. Even inexpensive treatment may only postpone removal while a replacement could already be establishing. If you would not deliberately plant and maintain that tree in its present location, recurring treatment is difficult to justify.

A badly declining ash with cracks, cavities, unstable roots or hazardous limbs is not a break-even exercise. Removal is the responsible choice when an arborist finds that the tree is structurally unsafe or too damaged to distribute treatment. Insecticide cannot restore lost strength.

Owners with several ash trees can use a hybrid plan: treat the healthiest, best-placed specimens; remove dangerous or severely declining trees first; phase out low-value trees; and establish diverse replacements. Municipal models are not household quotes, but they show why treating every tree or removing every tree is not always the best portfolio decision.

Waiting Can Remove Treatment From The Menu

Early assessment preserves both options. Preventive and very early treatment can protect functioning tissue. Once canopy and vascular damage become severe, removal may be the only practical choice.

Delay can also change the removal operation. Dead and badly declining ash can become brittle. A tree that was safe to climb may later require a lift, crane or more complicated rigging. There is no defensible universal surcharge for a dead ash, but the contractor should state whether today’s quote assumes the tree remains climbable.

Local rules still apply. Quarantines, pesticide requirements, wood-movement restrictions, street-tree ownership, utility responsibility, removal permits and replacement rules vary by jurisdiction. State messaging about protecting native ash populations should not be read as permission to ignore those obligations—or as proof that an otherwise suitable individual landscape tree has no treatment option.

Get the species, canopy condition, structural safety and likely cause of decline assessed first. Then obtain a treatment proposal with a documented product and interval and a removal quote that includes the stump and site-restoration scope. For a safe, healthy mature ash, the 10-year arithmetic usually favors treatment at the cited rates. For a dangerous or severely declining tree, removal wins before price enters the decision.
