Which Roundup Formulas Actually Stop Stump Regrowth

Identify which Roundup formulas can control a fresh-cut stump, which cannot, and when triclopyr, diquat, or glyphosate fits the product label.
Some new Roundup can kill a fresh-cut tree stump, but the answer depends on the bottle. A properly labeled systemic formula containing triclopyr or glyphosate can control living stump tissue; diquat alone is not reliable for killing established roots. U.S. residential Roundup transitioned away from glyphosate by the end of 2023, so the Roundup name no longer tells you what chemical is inside.
Roundup’s manufacturer specifically names Roundup Weed & Grass Killer Super Concentrate and Roundup Concentrate Poison Ivy Plus Tough Brush Killer in its stump-treatment guidance. That does not authorize every similarly named Roundup product. The current label on your exact bottle must permit the stump, woody-plant or cut-surface treatment.

The transition in residential Roundup is not worldwide or universal. HMNDP reports that U.S. consumer products moved away from glyphosate by the end of 2023 and that some replacement formulas use triclopyr, sometimes with diquat. Professional and agricultural Roundup products may still have different formulations. This account of the residential transition helps explain the change, but it cannot replace a pesticide label.
A dedicated glyphosate product also remains available in at least one other market. A UK retailer lists Roundup Tree Stump Weed Killer at 360 g/L glyphosate under authorization MAPP 18849. That is evidence of a UK product, not permission to import its concentration, method or timing into a U.S. treatment (retailer listing).
Glyphosate, Triclopyr And Diquat Produce Different Results
Glyphosate is a broad-spectrum systemic herbicide. When an appropriately formulated product reaches fresh living tissue, systemic movement can carry the effect beyond the cut surface and into the stump’s root system. The ingredient’s capabilities do not establish that a particular product is labeled for stumps.
Triclopyr is also systemic and is used against woody and broadleaf plants. It is therefore the relevant stump-control ingredient in some newer glyphosate-free formulas. It can injure desirable trees and shrubs, and its presence does not make every spray suitable for cut-stump use.
Diquat acts primarily by contact and is less translocated. It can produce rapid contact injury, including visibly burned shoots, without reliably killing the established roots when it acts alone. In a mixture, the complete formulation and label—not the quick browning—determine whether it is appropriate.
Alabama Cooperative Extension identifies suitably formulated glyphosate and triclopyr amine products as effective residential cut-stump options with little to no soil activity. It also reports that ready-to-use glyphosate products below 20% active ingredient do not work consistently for cut-stump treatment (extension cut-stump guidance).
That 20% finding is not a universal mixing instruction. The draft evidence provides no single lawful concentration for every triclopyr or glyphosate product. Use only the concentration and method printed on the exact label; a stronger formulation is not automatically authorized or more suitable.
The Label Must Authorize The Exact Treatment
Match the complete product name, active ingredients and percentage to the container in your hand. Terms such as “concentrate,” “weed and grass killer,” “extended control” and “tough brush” are not interchangeable.
The directions must cover the intended target, site and application method. Look for explicit language concerning cut stumps, woody plants, fresh cuts, recutting or resprouts. A general claim about killing weeds does not necessarily authorize pouring, painting or drilling the product into wood.
Also verify:
- The product’s registration or authorization applies where you live.
- The named tree or woody-plant category includes your target.
- The label permits the proposed cut-surface, outer-ring, drilling or shoot-treatment method.
- The stated concentration applies to this formulation rather than a similarly named bottle.
- Site restrictions allow use near lawns, gardens, water and desirable vegetation.
- Weather, protective-equipment, access, storage and disposal requirements can be followed.
Do not transfer a dilution from another concentration, drilling directions from another formula or seasonal instructions from another country. EPA describes glyphosate as a broad-spectrum herbicide sold in multiple formulations, but its controlling rule remains that a pesticide must be used according to its label (EPA glyphosate guidance).
If the exact local label does not permit the proposed stump or woody-plant treatment, do not improvise. Choose a product labeled for that use or use a physical method.
Fresh Living Tissue Gives Systemic Products Their Best Chance
Cut-stump treatment generally works best immediately after cutting, while the exposed outer tissue remains fresh. The target is the living ring just inside the bark, not the inactive heartwood at the center of a large stump.
Alabama Cooperative Extension recommends treating the cut surface within minutes and reports that delays reduce effectiveness. It also says rain within four to six hours may impair performance and advises against treatment during strong upward sap flow in early spring. Those are general findings; the bottle’s rain-free interval and seasonal restrictions still control.
Roundup’s guidance for its two named concentrates describes drilling into the living outer ring and immediately adding concentrate. That method cannot be combined with generic painting directions or transferred to a different bottle. There is no universal Roundup drilling pattern, quantity, dilution or retreatment schedule.
The manufacturer estimates that a stump treated under its described method will die in two to four weeks. That estimate applies to the named concentrates and method, not every species or formula. The meaningful test is whether shoots return over time, not whether the exposed surface quickly changes color.
Old And Resprouting Stumps Need Different Directions
A stump cut days, weeks or months ago does not meet fresh-cut conditions. Dry or sealed tissue may not take up a systemic herbicide effectively. Do not compensate by adding extra product, saturating the wood or inventing holes.
Use the product only if its label supplies an applicable method for recutting, old stumps, dormant stumps or resprouts. Otherwise, recut only as part of an authorized treatment or choose grinding, digging or another labeled approach.
Visible shoots do not prove that a foliar spray will kill the roots. A contact ingredient can burn those shoots while the root system survives. Monitor for replacement growth because renewed shoots can reveal surviving root tissue.
Species identification matters when the label limits the target plants or rates. If the species is unknown, do not assume that “brush” includes it. Some species also spread clonally or may have root connections with neighboring trees, which changes the risk substantially.
Shared Roots Can Put Nearby Trees At Risk
A systemic treatment intended to move through living tissue can injure vegetation that was not meant to be treated. Exposure can occur through direct contact with desirable foliage, bark or exposed roots. Connected root systems create an additional path.
Roundup’s manufacturer warns that treating one tree may injure an untreated neighboring tree when they share a root system. Connections can be difficult to identify from the surface, particularly among adjacent trees of the same species or plants arising through clonal growth.
If a valuable tree could share roots with the stump, seek an arborist’s assessment or use a nonchemical method. Grinding leaves roots underground, but it avoids deliberately introducing a systemic herbicide into potentially connected living tissue.
EPA says its 2017 human-health assessment found no risks of concern from registered glyphosate uses when label directions are followed. EPA is updating that assessment and anticipated completion in late 2026. Its glyphosate summary also identifies nearby non-target plants as the primary ecological concern. Those findings address registered glyphosate uses; they are not blanket assurances for other ingredients or off-label treatment.
Killing The Stump Does Not Remove The Wood
A successful systemic treatment kills living tissue and suppresses shoots. It does not grind out the stump, clear the planting area or make the wood immediately decay. Roundup’s manufacturer describes its treatment as killing the living stump without causing the remaining wood to rot.

Use a labeled systemic treatment when regrowth control is the objective and the stump can remain. Choose grinding or digging when you need a level area for lawn repair, replanting, a path, excavation or construction. Physical removal is also the safer choice when potentially connected valuable trees make systemic treatment too risky.
