The Viral Claims Are Mostly False or Misleading

The phrase gained attention from a video titled “How To Remove Any Tree Stump Fast (The Forgotten Old Amish Trick)”, posted August 14, 2026. It reached 95,000 views in 11 days and prompted rebuttal videos posted on August 14 and August 23.

The method itself is familiar: drill into the stump, introduce a nitrate-rich material, allow the wood to soften, and remove it mechanically or attempt to burn it. What is unsupported is the cultural origin and the promise that it works quickly on any stump without harming the lawn.

There is no evidence that Amish communities invented a secret formula or commonly use this particular sequence. An Amish person could use manual digging or encourage natural decay, but that does not establish either practice as a distinct Amish tradition.

Saltpeter Conditions Wood Rather Than Removing It

Potassium nitrate, also called saltpeter, is found in some commercial stump-treatment products. Its intended role is to help prepare the wood for decomposition. It does not dissolve the stump, sever the roots, or lift the remaining wood from the ground.

A conservative decay process consists of cutting the stump low, increasing its exposed surface area, maintaining moisture without waterlogging the wood, and allowing fungi, bacteria, and other organisms to break it down. A permeable cover can reduce drying while still allowing water and oxygen exchange.

Illinois Extension’s stump-removal guidance says surface area, aeration, moisture balance, nitrogen availability, species, sunlight, drainage, cutting date, and biological conditions can all affect decay. It recommends a permeable cover rather than sealed plastic.

Iowa State gives one specific preparation protocol: drill holes approximately one inch wide, at least ten inches deep, and no more than 12 inches apart. Its example then uses approximately four ounces of a slow-release, nitrate-rich fertilizer per hole. Those figures are source-specific guidance, not a universal recipe for every product, stump, or planting site.

The current label must control the use of any commercial stump remover. Directions from another brand, an old article, or a homemade saltpeter recipe are not substitutes for that label.

Sugar is not supported as an initial treatment for fresh wood. Illinois Extension mentions granulated sugar only as a possible later-stage addition after substantial decay has consumed some of the wood’s carbohydrate content. That is not evidence that sugar makes a fresh stump disappear.

Real Decay Takes Years, Not Days

Iowa State University Extension says untreated stump decay can take more than ten years. Deliberate preparation may make a stump removable after roughly one to three years. Neither figure is a guaranteed schedule.

A small stump already colonized by decomposers may soften sooner. A fresh, hard stump can resist treatment. Dense wood, large diameter, dry weather, poor drainage, limited biological activity, or an unfavorable moisture balance can extend the wait.

That four-to-six-week statement does not mean a complete stump and its roots vanish in that period. “Works” may mean that treated wood is ready for chopping or another removal step. It is a manufacturer’s sales claim, not independent evidence of complete removal, and it is especially inapplicable to a newly cut stump.

Chemical decay is therefore suitable only when the stump can remain safely in place, the ground is not needed soon, and the owner accepts that final chopping or digging may still be required.

Burning Is Not a Guaranteed or Harmless Final Step

A product page that mentions burning does not make stump burning legal or appropriate at a particular address. Local ordinances, permits, drought restrictions, fire conditions, product directions, and the stump’s surroundings all matter.

Illinois Extension warns that burning may continue for days, can damage or sterilize nearby soil, and can leave charred wood that resists further microbial decay. Underground roots and cavities also make the behavior of a smoldering stump difficult to judge from the surface.

EPA’s Burn Wise material is a historical resource about wood smoke and better burning practices. It is not stump-specific approval and does not say that burning a chemically treated stump is safe, legal, or recommended.

Professional grinding commonly reaches approximately six to 12 inches below grade, although actual depth depends on the machine, site, stump, obstacles, and contracted work.

Grinding leaves most of the wider root system underground. That is often acceptable beneath an ordinary lawn, mulch area, or shallow planting bed. It may not provide enough clearance for a footing, paving, utilities, drainage work, major grading, or a replacement tree in the same position.

Davey Tree’s comparison similarly distinguishes grinding from full removal and notes that roots remain underground. Before accepting a quote, establish the grinding depth, whether major lateral roots are included, where the chips will go, what backfill is provided, and whether final grading or lawn restoration is part of the job.

Hand Digging Works Only Within Practical Limits

If the tree has not been cut low, retaining several feet of trunk provides leverage. Iowa State recommends four to six feet where practical and treats hand digging as generally suitable for stumps under roughly 12 inches. These are guidance thresholds, not guarantees. A shallow-rooted stump in workable soil may be manageable at a larger diameter. A smaller stump can be difficult when roots run under paving, the soil is compacted, the wood is dense, or working room is restricted.

Before digging, identify public and private buried services, including irrigation, lighting, drainage, and septic components. Stop if the underground layout is uncertain or roots cannot be exposed and cut safely. Pulling a stump with a truck, tractor, chain, rope, or improvised rig is not a substitute for controlled excavation.

After grinding, remove excess chips rather than treating a deep mass of grindings as soil. Iowa State and Illinois Extension recommend clearing shavings or chips and adding suitable soil for turf establishment. Buried wood debris can affect soil structure, moisture, available nitrogen, and settlement.

Grinding also does not guarantee that living roots will stop producing shoots. If the species can resprout from living roots, treat regrowth as a separate problem and use only a method labeled for that plant and site.
